When to choose each option

If your company needs a new website, you have more options today than ever. You can use WordPress, work with a visual site builder, or build it with the help of AI tools like Lovable, Cursor or Claude Code.

Ever since these tools took off, the question comes up in almost every kickoff meeting: “What if we build it with AI?” Sometimes that’s exactly what the project needs. Other times, it’s the fastest way to end up with a website nobody on the team knows how to update.

A ten-page corporate website doesn’t have the same needs as a platform with a members’ area, custom features or integrations with other systems. Let’s look at when each option fits, what it means for SEO, and five questions to help you get the decision right.

1. When WordPress makes sense

WordPress is usually a good choice when you need a content-driven website and want to manage it without relying on a developer for every change. For example:

A corporate website: services, company information, team and contact.

A blog with an SEO strategy: publishing often, organizing categories and building internal links.

A website a non-technical team will update: editing text, images and pages from an admin dashboard.

Common features: forms, multiple languages or ecommerce, with the right tools.

Its big advantage is the ecosystem: large, well known, and full of professionals who can work on your site down the road.

That doesn’t mean it’s always the simplest option. Plugins, updates, compatibility, security and performance all need maintenance. A WordPress site with too many plugins and a sloppy setup ends up as hard to maintain as any custom build.

2. When an AI-built website might be right for you

A website built with the help of AI makes sense when you want a highly customized experience, need to test an idea quickly, or want features that don’t fit a conventional template:

A very specific landing page: for a campaign or a particular sales proposal.

Custom features: calculators, configurators, advanced search or interactive experiences.

A digital product: a web app that doesn’t just display information but lets people get things done.

An interface connected to other systems: for example, a tool that pulls data from a CRM or a database.

A prototype to validate an idea: a first version to check whether something makes sense before investing more.

AI tools speed up design and code generation. But the result depends on how the project is planned, which technology you choose and how much testing happens before launch.

And one point that often gets overlooked: an AI-built website also needs maintenance, security, SEO and a clear way to manage content. If you’ll be editing lots of pages regularly, decide from the start how they’ll be updated and who will be able to do it.

3. WordPress vs. an AI-built website

Criterion

WordPress

AI-assisted development

Standard corporate website

Usually a good fit

Can work, but may not offer enough advantages

Blog and frequent publishing

Mature publishing ecosystem

You need to plan how content will be managed

Highly customized design

Possible, depending on the theme and development

More freedom in implementation

Custom features

May require plugins or custom development

Allows solutions tailored to the project

Integrations with other systems

Depends on the connectors and development

Depends on the APIs and how the integration is designed

Maintenance

WordPress, theme and plugin updates

Maintaining the code, dependencies and infrastructure

Ease of editing

Familiar admin dashboard

An editing system has to be designed or added

This comparison is only a guide. AI isn’t a single technology, and it doesn’t guarantee a better, faster or cheaper website.

4. What if you combine WordPress with AI?

You don’t always have to choose.

You can keep WordPress as your content management system and use AI to speed up development or add specific features: a smart search, an assistant that answers questions about your services, or a tool that helps sort incoming inquiries.

This combination makes sense when you want to keep a familiar editing dashboard but need capabilities that don’t come out of the box. The key is deciding what each technology handles and not adding complexity unless a feature brings a clear benefit.

5. Five questions to help you choose

Before deciding how to build your website, answer these five questions. If any of them doesn’t have a clear answer, that’s your first task.

What kind of website do you need?

An informational website is not the same as an app with user accounts and custom features. If your site is mostly content, the scales tip toward a CMS.

Who will update the content?

If your team will publish pages and articles often, they need an easy way to manage content. A stunning website that only a developer can touch is a bottleneck.

Which features are must-haves?

Separate the ones you can cover with existing tools from the ones that need custom development. The “must-have” list often shrinks quite a bit once you do this.

Who will maintain the website?

Consider updates, security, integrations and whether you’ll be able to find professionals to work on the project two years from now, not just today.

What might grow in the future?

You don’t need to build all of tomorrow’s features today, but you should avoid decisions that block foreseeable expansions.

And compare the total cost: initial development, hosting, licenses, maintenance and future changes. The price of the first version doesn’t tell the whole story.

6. Which option is better for SEO?

Neither, on its own. Both WordPress and an AI-built website can rank well; the technology doesn’t guarantee results.

What matters is how the site is built and maintained: useful content, a clear structure, well-planned URLs, crawlable and indexable pages, performance, mobile experience and tidy internal linking.

With WordPress, you need to configure the theme, plugins and technical settings properly. With a custom site, you need to check that important pages can be crawled, that metadata is implemented correctly and that content doesn’t depend on JavaScript to display.

If you also want to build visibility in search engines and AI systems, plan the structure and content from the start. Fixing SEO after launch always costs more than designing it in beforehand.

Our recommendation

If you need a corporate website or a blog your team can update easily, WordPress is still a very sensible choice.

If you need a highly customized experience, an app or features that require custom development, building with AI may be the best alternative, as long as the process includes technical review, testing and a maintenance plan.

And if you need both, combine them. What we don’t recommend is choosing the technology before you know what the website has to do.

Choose a website you can maintain

WordPress and AI aren’t competing for the same spot. One is a mature ecosystem for managing content; the other is a faster way to build what doesn’t fit in a template. Choosing well depends on what your website has to do, who will maintain it and where it might grow.

At La Teva IA, we help companies figure out which solution fits their project and build websites and digital tools with AI when it makes sense.
